Pracinha do Vidigal & Ponto das Kombis

The enforcer's hill and the fleet that climbs it

Where Avenida Niemeyer meets the steep climb of Avenida Presidente João Goulart, there is a small square that runs on a very distinct kind of choreography. This is Pracinha do Vidigal, the main gateway to the community and its primary transport exchange.

Ordinary municipal city buses cannot handle what lies ahead. The streets up the mountainside twist into hairpins so sharp and steep that standard transit simply gave up on them. So the neighbourhood built its own system: a tireless fleet of Volkswagen Kombis, passenger vans, and mototaxis that shuttle thousands of residents up and down every single day.

Even the passenger shelter here tells you something about local initiative. What could have been an ordinary concrete roof was converted by residents into the Telhado Orgânico Medicinal, a living green roof planted with medicinal herbs.

Yet the name of this entire hillside carries a rather sharp historical irony. Major Miguel Nunes Vidigal was an early nineteenth-century commander of Rio's Royal Police Guard. In 1820, Benedictine monks gifted him this tract of land at the base of the cliffs. The Major was feared across Rio, famous for hunting down and violently breaking up capoeira circles, Afro-Brazilian religious gatherings, and early samba celebrations. He was so notoriously ruthless that he even ended up immortalised as a tyrannical figure in Brazilian satirical literature.

Two centuries later, the enforcer's name is still stamped on the mountain. But the community that built itself here turned out to be one of the greatest centres of Afro-Brazilian culture, samba, and self-made urban life in the entire city.
