Cascatinha Taunay

The Painter's Waterfall

The sound of rushing water hits you before you even catch a glimpse of the drop. This is Cascatinha Taunay, where the Tijuca and Conde rivers tumble thirty-five meters down dark granite shelves, making it the tallest cascade in this part of the forest.

Two centuries ago, this gorge was deep wilderness. When French painter Nicolas-Antoine Taunay arrived in Brazil in 1816, following the collapse of Napoleon's empire in Europe, he decided this roaring ravine was the exact spot to build a home. He put up a stone manor right beside the cataract in 1817 and started painting the water from every angle, turning a wild tropical cataract into high romantic art for the Portuguese royal court.

Taunay essentially set up a mountain salon here. Princes and visiting diplomats would hike up from the sweltering coastal capital to sit on his veranda, drink wine, and admire the cascade through European landscape conventions. His house did not survive; it was torn down in 1946, leaving only scattered foundations in the undergrowth.

What did survive is the Roman-arched stone bridge spanning the canyon. An imperial engineer named Job de Alcântara built it in 1860, cutting heavy granite blocks to frame the waterfall like a stage set. It gives the cataract an almost theatrical neatness: a wild mountain river pinned down by French romanticism and imperial stonework.
