Mirante da Boa Viagem Esplanade

A cliff edge above the bay

When you walk onto this windswept promontory at Mirante da Boa Viagem, the first thing that strikes you is how much of the space has been left completely open. You are standing on twenty-five hundred square meters of bare concrete plaza, perched high on the cliff edge with Guanabara Bay spread out on three sides.

Back in May 1991, Niterói's mayor, Jorge Roberto Silveira, and his cultural councilor, Ítalo Campofiorito, brought the architect Oscar Niemeyer right out to this ledge. They wanted a cultural landmark for their city, something that could hold its own against the famous postcard skyline of Rio de Janeiro just across the water. Niemeyer was already in his eighties, with decades of monument-building behind him. A lot of architects would have crowded this narrow point with walls, gates, and wings.

Niemeyer did the opposite. He later said that looking out at the narrow rock, the sea, and the silhouette of Sugarloaf Mountain across the bay, the circular form seemed to emerge naturally from the landscape. It would not fight the view; it would lift off the ground and frame it.

That choice explains why this vast esplanade feels almost like an empty flight deck. Niemeyer deliberately kept it bare so that nothing interrupts the panorama. Before you ever look at a painting or walk through a door, the site itself does the heavy lifting.
