The Eclectic Facade on Cinelândia

A Temple for a New Republic

Cinelândia does not do subtle, and neither does the exterior of Brazil's National Library.

When construction started in 1905, Rio de Janeiro was tearing itself apart to look modern. Mayor Pereira Passos flattened colonial streets and evicted residents to carve out Avenida Central, determined to build a miniature Paris in the tropics. The young Brazilian Republic wanted to prove it had outgrown its imperial past, and it needed grand public monuments to anchor the new civic square.

The man hired to design this massive statement was not an academic architect, but a military engineer, General Francisco Marcelino de Sousa Aguiar. He designed a classical temple that borrowed freely from neoclassical and Beaux-Arts styles, complete with six colossal Corinthian columns, a classical pediment, and bronze allegorical statues celebrating printing, bibliography, and the Republic itself. By the time the building opened on October 29, 1910, it delivered exactly what the government wanted: an unmistakable monument to orderly, civilized progress.

Yet there was a curious contradiction behind all that marble and bronze. The building presented itself as a temple for a proud new republic, but the intellectual treasures waiting inside had not been gathered by republican scholars. They were the private inheritance of the very monarchy the republic had just overthrown.
