Casarão Histórico & Darcy Ribeiro's Vision

A 19th-century mansion turned counter-argument

When Darcy Ribeiro helped create this museum in 1953, he was not trying to build a quiet cabinet of curiosities. Brazil's Indian Protection Service wanted something far more aggressive: an institution designed to push back against the widespread, comfortable prejudice that Indigenous cultures were relics destined to vanish.

Ribeiro's wager was that ignorance drove contempt. If urban Brazilians actually encountered Indigenous technologies, languages, and philosophies, the myth of the primitive would crack. The museum first set up shop near the Maracanã stadium before packing its trunks in 1978 and moving across the city to this elegant, eclectic two-story mansion in Botafogo. It was built around 1880 for a wealthy food entrepreneur named João Rodrigues Teixeira, complete with high ceilings and decorative plasterwork, protected by heritage laws since the late 1960s.

There is a sharp irony in housing a radical ethnographic project inside the domestic palace of a coffee-era merchant. For decades, Western institutions treated Indigenous people as passive subjects studied by outsiders. You looked through the glass, read a label written by a state anthropologist, and moved on.

In recent years, that dynamic has been completely dismantled. The institution formally renamed itself the Museu Nacional dos Povos Indígenas, deliberately plural, and put Indigenous leaders, including scholars like Fernanda Kaingáng and Juliana Tupinambá, in charge. The building still looks like an imperial-era residence, but the authority inside it has fundamentally changed hands.
