Base of the Steps & Selarón's Manifesto

A vow carved in ceramic

At the corner where Rua Joaquim Silva meets the slope in Lapa, two hundred and fifteen stone steps climb straight up toward the bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa. Back in 1990, this was an ordinary, cracked municipal passageway that most people avoided if they could.

The man who changed that was Jorge Selarón, a Chilean painter who had traveled the world before settling in a small rented house along the stairs. During the 1990 World Cup, he decided to clean up the crumbling concrete right outside his front door as a personal tribute to the Brazilian people. He started patching the risers with bits of tile, working entirely on his own dime.

What began as a spontaneous gesture quickly turned into an obsession that consumed the rest of his life. Near the base, Selarón eventually cemented a written declaration into the wall: a manifesto announcing that this crazy and unprecedented dream would end only on the day of his death.

It sounded theatrical, but he meant every word. Over the next two decades, those hundred and twenty-five meters of neglected city stairs became one of the most singular open-air monuments in the world, built one fragment at a time.
