The Portico and GaliléThe Merchants' Street Portal

Where street commerce meets sacred ground

At number 35 Rua do Ouvidor, right at the corner of Travessa do Comércio, you find yourself at one of colonial Rio's busiest crossroads. For centuries, this alleyway hummed with traders, clerks, and couriers rushing between warehouses and the harbor. The church sits directly on the street line, almost elbowing its way into the commercial bustle.

Before stepping inside, you cross through the galilé, a three-arched entrance porch enclosed by heavy iron gates. In Portuguese church architecture, a galilé is not just an aesthetic flourish. It creates a practical buffer between the loud, muddy marketplace and the quiet sanctuary. Peddlers could pause here, shake off the dust of the street, and collect themselves before entering prayer.

What you see on the facade today owes much of its crisp elegance to a major redesign finished in 1873. The master woodcarver and architect Antônio de Pádua e Castro reworked the older eighteenth-century front, smoothing late Baroque curves into orderly nineteenth-century symmetries. Above the doors, he set niches holding stone statues: Saint Bernard and Saint Adrian flank the lower windows, while the Trinitarian founders, Saint Felix of Valois and Saint John of Matha, watch over the upper storey.

Right in the center sits a carved marble medallion showing the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. It was a deliberate statement by the neighborhood traders who funded it. They wanted anyone rushing past down Rua do Ouvidor to know that their humble street chapel had grown into a serious civic landmark.
