Antiga Estacao Ferroviaria de Petrolina

Where the iron road met the river

When this train station opened its doors on March 1, 1923, it brought something revolutionary to the dry backlands of Pernambuco: a fast, reliable lifeline straight to the outside world.

Take in the building's tidy symmetry. With its two-story central pavilion, graceful flanking wings, and delicate wooden fretwork trimming the platform eaves, it looks almost European. Yet it was engineered to anchor the Estrada de Ferro Petrolina-Teresina, tying the São Francisco riverfront into the wider Leste Brasileiro rail network. Before rails reached this bend in the river, hauling regional cargo meant slow, grueling days on animal paths or trusting the unpredictable seasonal waters of the river.

Suddenly, sacks of cotton, dry goods, and entire families could travel hundreds of kilometers inland without battling the dust. The station transformed Petrolina from a sleepy river crossing into a genuine regional hub. For almost fifty years, the platform bustled with steam whistles, passengers in travel suits, and porters moving crates of produce.

Then asphalt arrived. Highways gradually siphoned off cargo, and bus lines proved cheaper. On April 6, 1971, the last scheduled train pulled away from this platform, ending Petrolina's rail era for good. The tracks fell quiet, but the handsome terminal remains, marking the exact moment modern mobility reached the interior.
