Behind the bars of the frontier boom
When you look at this sturdy brick compound on Rua Sergipe, it does not immediately suggest an afternoon coffee or an art gallery. That is because it was built between 1939 and 1943 to do something much grimmer. It was Londrina's third public jail, designed to replace a flimsy wooden lockup that frontier suspects kept escaping from.
Rapid growth on the coffee frontier brought quick fortunes, but it also brought real disorder. The authorities planned this building to hold sixty prisoners. Before long, it routinely held more than two hundred. For fifty years, the compound was notorious for overcrowding, frequent riots, and desperate escapes, until the state finally shut it down in 1994.
After that, the building sat abandoned for years. Demolition seemed almost inevitable, but local architecture students pushed back, arguing that the darker side of Londrina's boom years deserved remembering too. In 2011, Fecomércio took on the lease, and architect Ângela Kawka led a careful seventeen-month restoration.
They did not erase the building's past. When you walk through today, the original iron cell doors and inmate inscriptions are still there on the walls. Right beside them, the former exercise yard now holds a cafe and an exhibition on regional coffee history. It is a striking contrast: the crop that built this city, told inside the cells that held the people who fell through its cracks.
