Estátua do Nego D'Água & Bairro Angari

The river spirit who demands a drink

Out in the riverbed off Bairro Angari, a dark, twelve-meter figure rises straight out of the water. This is Nego D'Água, sculpted in iron and concrete by local artist Lêdo Ivo Gomes de Oliveira between 1999 and 2003. Depending on how much water the dam upstream is releasing, he might be waist-deep in the São Francisco or stranded high on a sandy bank, staring back at the shore.

He looks imposing, and along this river, nobody treats him as mere decoration. For generations, fishermen here have grown up with the warning that Nego D'Água owns the river depths. In local lore, he is an amphibious being with webbed hands who delights in tearing fishing nets, frightening boatmen, and flipping canoes upside down. If you want him to leave your lines alone, the rule is simple: you toss an offering into the current. Usually a shot of cachaça, or a twist of tobacco.

That dynamic makes perfect sense when you turn toward Bairro Angari itself. This is Juazeiro's oldest waterfront neighborhood, settled over a century and a quarter ago by washerwomen and traditional fishermen. Their daily survival depended entirely on the river's moods, long before modern flood controls existed.

When Lêdo Ivo anchored this giant directly into the river stones, he gave a face to the unspoken bargain the community has kept with the São Francisco for generations. It is a reminder that out on this water, you never assume you are the one in charge.
