Estádio Municipal Frei Epifânio d'Abadia

The friar who played in shorts

A football stadium named after a Catholic friar sounds like an odd pairing, but in Imperatriz, it makes complete sense. Back in the nineteen-fifties, this ground was just an uneven dirt pitch where local workers kicked a ball around after long shifts. Then an Italian Capuchin missionary named Frei Epifânio arrived, and the game changed entirely.

Frei Epifânio was born in Italy in 1916 and reached this frontier town in 1952. He quickly realized that if he wanted to connect with the local community, delivering sermons from behind an altar was not enough. He needed to meet people where they gathered. The problem was that playing football in a heavy monastic habit was practically impossible in the tropical heat. So he did something extraordinary for the time: he petitioned his religious superiors for formal permission to strip down to shorts and join the matches himself.

It worked. The sight of an Italian friar running across the red dust earned him enormous trust and respect. He turned that shared passion into a community project, rallying the town to replace the informal clearing with a proper civic stadium. When the municipal arena finally opened on January 30, 1966, naming it in his honor felt entirely natural.

Today, the stadium is the home ground for Sociedade Imperatriz de Desportos, known affectionately across Maranhão as the Cavalo de Aço, the Iron Horse. The bleachers still shake during state championships, but the venue also hosts massive religious gatherings like Corpus Christi. That dual personality has never really faded. It remains a place where civic pride, community spirit, and Sunday devotion comfortably share the very same turf.
