Praça da Mandioca
From frontier lard to bohemian nights
When gold prospectors flooded into this valley in the 1720s, they quickly discovered a universal truth: you cannot eat gold dust. Out on this frontier, thousands of miles from the coast, a sack of cassava root or animal fat was worth far more than another handful of shiny nuggets.
That practical desperation created this square around 1727. It began as Largo do Sebo, named for the animal tallow sold to make soap and candles, before becoming Largo da Mandioca, the primary depot where local growers traded manioc flour. The colonial government eventually tried to give the place some dignified aristocratic pedigree by renaming it after the first governor-general, the Count of Azambuja. But nobody in Cuiabá paid much attention. Three centuries later, everyone still calls it Praça da Mandioca.
The single-story houses lining the perimeter show you the rhythm of early Cuiabá. Thick walls, shuttered windows, and tiled eaves built low to the ground to survive the fierce inland heat. During the day, it can feel like a drowsy colonial relic.
Yet as evening arrives, the tables spill into the street and the square shifts completely. It turns into one of the city's great meeting places for samba, cold beer, and carnival rehearsals. That feels fitting: an administrative decree could not erase the cassava market, and three hundred years later, everyday street life still owns the square.
