Estação Cultura (Antiga Estação da Companhia Paulista)

Steam, coffee, and the end of the mule train

Until the early 1870s, moving a sack of coffee out of Campinas was an exercise in pure patience. Everything traveled on the backs of mules, plodding down muddy dirt tracks toward the coast for weeks on end. If the weather turned, the cargo rotted. Then, in August 1872, the Companhia Paulista ran its first locomotive into town, and the entire pace of life changed overnight.

This grand brick passenger terminal, completed in 1884, was built to look like it belonged in industrial Britain rather than tropical São Paulo. That was entirely deliberate. The coffee planters and railway directors were importing British engineers, British iron, and British notions of clockwork efficiency. Suddenly, freight that had taken weeks to reach the port of Santos arrived in hours, and the profits flooded straight back into Campinas.

For well over a century, this platform was the front door to the interior. European and Asian immigrants stepped off these trains into new lives, and generations of commuters set their pocket watches by the station clock. Regular passenger services finally ground to a halt in March 2001, when the last train pulled out for Araraquara. Today, the municipal cultural center keeps the iron sheds and brickwork alive, but the stillness on the tracks is a striking contrast to the engine that built modern São Paulo.
