Praça da Liberdade
Order, symmetry, and imperial palms
When Minas Gerais decided to invent a brand-new capital in the 1890s, the planners did not want anything that reminded them of the colonial past. The old capital, Ouro Preto, was a tangled maze of steep cobblestones and gold-rush churches built under the Portuguese crown. The new republic wanted reason, hygiene, and absolute order. Praça da Liberdade was designed to be the brain of that experiment.
Engineer Aarão Reis placed this square at the high point of his grid, setting aside the ground for the governor and the state ministries. But the look of the place changed dramatically in the 1920s when French landscape architect Paul Villon redesigned the grounds. Villon drew heavily on the formal gardens of Versailles. He laid out neat gravel paths, geometric hedges, water fountains, and imported a central iron bandstand where civic brass bands played on Sunday afternoons.
Running right down the middle is an esplanade flanked by tall imperial palms. They form an unbroken visual runway leading straight toward the governor's palace at the far end. That axis was deliberate. Every perspective was calculated so that wherever you walked in these gardens, your eye was pulled back toward the seat of executive authority. It was a European daydream planted on a tropical plateau, meant to reassure everyone that the wild mountains of Minas Gerais were finally under bureaucratic control.
