Forte do Presépio (Forte do Castelo)

A fragile foothold on the bay

Belém started right here on this small headland overlooking the mouth of the Guamá River and Guajará Bay.

In January 1616, a Portuguese captain named Francisco Caldeira Castelo Branco sailed into these waters with three ships. His instructions were clear enough: plant a military outpost before the Dutch, English, or French managed to carve out their own permanent base in the Amazon basin. He raised a modest palisade made of timber and thatch, gave it the pious name Forte do Presépio, and mounted a handful of cannons.

From the water, that wooden stockade might have looked like an empire claiming an entire continent. On the ground, it was perilously fragile. The Portuguese were clinging to a narrow spit of earth, surrounded by vast waterways they barely understood and facing immediate resistance from the indigenous Tupinambá who already inhabited the shore. Friction quickly erupted into open warfare. The colony survived, but barely, sustained only by reinforcements and the grim military resolve to turn that fragile wooden camp into something permanent.

Over the decades that followed, the palisade gave way to rammed earth and thick stone masonry, evolving into the heavy defensive bastion we see today. You can still pace the battery parapets where bronze naval cannons silently point across the river. But behind those walls sits the real turning point: a small wooden stockade that transformed this quiet river bend into Portugal's colonial gateway to the Amazon.
